The formation of plaque on teeth leads not only to calculus or tartar buildup but also to gingivitis. And if gingivitis is left untreated, it will progress into more advanced periodontal disease. Studies have shown an increased risk for kidney, heart, liver, and pulmonary disease all stemming from late-stage dental disease and poor oral care. To learn more about dental disease click HERE.

Keep your pet healthy with proper oral care! Prevent dental disease before it starts by scheduling their pre-dental exam with lab work today. If your pet has been seen recently and had pre-operative diagnostics within the last 14 days, call us to book their dental procedure. Let’s keep those tails wagging and smiles shining!

Dental issues can cause the following problems:

Bad breath

Broken or loose teeth

Abnormal chewing, drooling or dropping food from the mouth

Reduced appetite or refusal to eat

Pain in or around the mouth

Bleeding from the mouth

Swelling in the areas surrounding the mouth

Some pets become irritable when they have dental problems, and any changes in your pet's behavior should prompt a visit. Always be careful when evaluating your pet's mouth, a painful animal may bite.

What to Expect During Your Pet’s Dental Procedure
At our veterinary hospital, your pet’s dental health and overall well-being are our top priorities. Here’s what happens during a dental procedure:

Pre-Anesthetic Preparation – Before the procedure, your pet will have a pre-operative exam with the veterinarian. A preanesthetic medication will be administered to help keep your pet calm and reduce the amount of injectable and inhalant anesthetics needed.

IV Catheter & Fluids – An intravenous (IV) catheter will be placed to allow us to administer fluids, helping to maintain hydration and stabilize blood pressure. This also provides access for any necessary medications during the procedure

Anesthesia & Monitoring – Your pet will be placed under general anesthesia, ensuring they remain comfortable and pain-free. One of our highly trained veterinary nurses will continuously monitor their vital signs, including heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, throughout the procedure.

Comprehensive Dental Cleaning – A thorough dental cleaning will be performed by a skilled veterinary nurse. This includes scaling above and below the gumline to remove plaque and tartar, preventing periodontal disease.

Tooth Polishing – After scaling, each tooth is polished to smooth the enamel. This helps reduce future plaque buildup and bacterial adhesion, promoting long-term oral health

Dental Radiographs (X-rays) – Full-mouth dental radiographs will be taken, just like those at your own dentist’s office. These images allow us to assess the health of the teeth beneath the gum line, identifying hidden issues such as fractures, infections, or abscesses.

Veterinary Examination & Treatment – The veterinarian will perform a detailed oral exam, assessing each tooth for abnormalities such as deep pockets, fractures, or infection. If any necessary treatments are identified, they will be addressed during the procedure.

Post-Operative Care – Your pet may go home with medications as needed, which your veterinary nurse will review with you at discharge. We will also provide guidance on at-home dental care to help maintain your pet’s oral health and keep their breath fresh.

Our goal is to ensure your pet’s comfort and long-term well-being through comprehensive dental care. If you have any questions before or after the procedure, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
